At first glance, “The Matildas” appears to be a science-fiction crime thriller. However, the focus of the story is actually on the titular character, Matilda, and her personal development.

While the story gets off to a slow start, “The Matildas” builds into an engaging read — capped by a fiery and very bloody pair of climaxes — and a disturbingly morally ambiguous aftermath.

This is a science fiction novel with a central scientific invention. However, the book leaves one wondering why the characters do not try to use their discovery beyond the very limited purposes that they they do. But, that quirk is actually consistent with the underlying theme of the story. The underlying theme revolves around “trying.” It focuses on the protagonist Matilda and her realization that she is not trying hard enough with her life and the people in it.

All in all, “The Matildas” is a good read, and it leaves the reader with a profound question. ‘Just as the people in this story are not trying hard enough with their lives — am I putting enough effort into my life?’

We look forward to a sequel!

“The Matildas” is self-published by author Dave Pasquantonio on Amazon.
